Ghana tightens security after terrorist threats

Ghana’s president John Mahama has recommended public vigilance following a security alert that terrorists are planning to attack the country.

Mahama’s declaration comes after Ghana’s national security council secretariat said it has evidence from neighbouring Ivory Coast that Islamists are planning a terrorist attack on the country.

A memo from Ghana’s immigration service warned that the country and Togo were the next targets for Islamist militants following high-profile attacks this year in Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

The memo calls for heightened security and better border protection in the wake of the threats.

According to the report, the choice of Ghana is to take away the perception that only francophone countries are targeted.

The confirmation by Ghana’s security service comes just few days after a prophecy of an imminent attack from controversial Nigerian prophet T.B Joshua which created panic among Ghanaians but which was dismissed as baseless by some government officials.
